The start of the year always makes me feel like I can achieve anything. I hit the ground running and take on as many tasks as I can and then…the slump kicks in. It can be easy to feel bogged down by life and it’s many hurdles. Particularly nowadays with the cost of living high and people struggling to find gainful employment, access healthcare and get a foot on the property ladder.
Fortunately for us, there are small and quick ways to bounce back!
Here are 5 quick ways that I give myself a boost when I’m feeling down!

1. Remind yourself how awesome you are

Write down some straightforward messages or quotes that remind you of your worth and prompt you to practice self-love.
You can write these on sticky notes and put them up, or keep it handy in a notebook or journal that you carry with you. Another fun interactive way to do this is to schedule emails to yourself so you can get mini-boosts throughout the day, week, month and so on.
2. Turn to your faves
What is your comfort TV show or movie? Drop a comment below 👇🏿 if you’d like to share.
I’ll go first – I’ve watched 10 Things I Hate About You a ridiculous amount of times. It is my ultimate comfort movie.
I have a few comfort shows that I put on when I’m feeling low and need a quick pick me up.
Alternatively, you can turn to your favourite songs, books – and even a treasured snack or drink.

3. Write a letter to your discomfort (or any other emotion that’s bothering you).

This is a fun exercise. It can feel awkward, but once you get into it, it’s interesting what comes out. I once wrote one and by the end of it, I was thanking my discomfort for making me realise I had to figure out what was causing it so I would feel better.
4. Straight up journalling

I should trademark ™️ that. Straight up journalling. This is no frills, stream of consciousness writing and getting everything you’re feeling out. Alternatively, you can try picking a reflective question and making the basis of your journal entry. I find this is a good way to make me think about things. There are a lot of resources online that have great questions.
5. Learn a new skill

I’m several years late but I’m using Duolingo for the first time and I always feel more energetic after I’ve done a few lessons.
Taking five minutes to enhance a skill can work wonders for improving your overall mood.
