Could you be happier?

We are officially in the final stretch of the year and I am in a reflective mood. I find myself in a transitional period and instead of being bogged down by the uncertainty, I’ve decided to embrace it. The topics I will be covering over the next months are:

  • Happiness
  • Overcoming stress
  • Developing self-confidence
  • 5 Things I’ve Learnt in 2025

If you would like to contribute to Purplexed Science and are interested in these topics (or one of your own, please feel free to get in touch!).

Happiness

Could you be happier?

I was journalling recently and I came across a question on happiness:

How do I usually express my happiness?

I wasn’t sure where to begin. My answer was a what is happiness? How can I be happier? When was the last time I felt happy? Have I ever felt happy?

Naturally, I did my research and I came across this 10 day happiness program from Action For Happiness. I have just started it and I will follow up in 10 days time!

In the meantime, I looked up ways to be happier.

According to the NHS, exercising, managing stress, eating a balanced diet, building self esteem and enjoying yourself are ways you can boost your happiness.

Things that I do that make me happy:

Writing: I love writing. There’s nothing that puts me in my zen mode more than a blank document, a great playlist and inspiration.

Research: Wikipedia black holes are my Kryptonite.

Journalling: Getting all the feelings out (or complaining about that silly thing that seems petty but is perfectly okay in a safe space.

Giving myself time to rest: This could be considered mindfulness. Allowing myself to relax and be present in the moment without stressing over things I cannot control.

Exercising: I don’t do much these days, but I find it rewarding (endorphins, everyone!) and feel a zsjze of accomplishment after a good workout.

Music: I’m never far from headphones. Music inspires creativity, it relaxes me and sometimes, it allows me to drown out the noise.

It can be incredibly difficult to find joy in these things when I’m going through a hard time, and this is what I’m hoping to work through with the happiness program and my journalling.

How can we find happiness in our darkest moments and use it to guide us to the light?

Find out in part two (coming in roughly 10 days!).
