2023 was the second warmest year on record

Last year was the UK’s second warmest on record, according to provisional data from the Met Office. This puts it just behind 2022, which recorded an average temperature of only 0.06C higher. For both Wales and Northern Ireland, 2023 was their hottest year on record. The national weather service said climate change has made the high temperatures “significantly more likely”.

In what is not a promising start to the year, the article also notes that the Copernicus Climate Change Service will most likely confirm that 2023 was the hottest year. The current UK government do not seem too concerned about climate change, but it is clear that action needs to be taken now and not when it is too late. While climate change may not always be obvious, there are serious consequences – such as increased deaths in over-65s, droughts, flooding and storms – all of which pose danger to life.
